TO WAR

Erica flew backward and settled into a palanquin, back in the depths of her troops. Sinking into the soft chair, she crossed her legs and tapped her staff against her palm. Abruptly, she threw her arm forward, pointing ahead with her staff. “Go forth!”

The army in white charged at the ragtag group of friends.

Domi glanced at Zeke. “Now?”

“Wait just a moment.” Zeke stretched out his hand, pointing into the crowd. He activated his new skills.

[Mold Flesh] [Morph Machinery] [Create Cyborg]

Two people in the depths of the army suddenly froze. They slumped over, dropping to the ground. Their flesh swirled, reshaping. A nearby car jerked toward them as wires, circuit boards, and raw metal leaped out of it to wrap around their bodies.

Even as the two bodies shifted, Zeke’s stomach emptied. His body caved inward, hollowing out what little flesh remained under his armor. A fierce grumble rolled out from his stomach.

Gritting his teeth, Zeke jerked forward, his feet moving on their own. “Never—never mind. Attack!”

Domi nodded. “You got it, boss.”

“Yes!” Mia charged forward, her eyes locked on Erica.

Zeke threw himself into the crowd mouth-first. His jaws latched onto an arm, as a white-dressed man defended himself. Without hesitating, Zeke slammed his jaws shut and yanked a mouthful of cotton and flesh off the man’s arm. He swallowed, closing his eyes in bliss.

Hungry…so hungry. I need more!

A bottle smashed over his head. Zeke whirled. The woman jerked back, startled, the bottle in her hand broken down to the neck. A moment later, her eyes hardened. She rushed at him again, stabbing with the bottle neck.

Zeke grabbed her wrist. His jaws closed around her throat. Without bothering to rip it out, he chewed, swallowing down great gulps of meat. It barely filled his stomach, the skill he’d used continuing to hollow him out.

Metal shone. Zeke whirled and grabbed a bat out of midair. Tugging it toward him, he pulled away from the woman and thrust his jaws toward the man who swung it. The man staggered with the bat, falling toward Zeke’s jaws.

[Devour]

Bone crunched. Zeke tilted his head back, gulping the man’s neck down. Eyes still wide with surprise, the man’s head toppled to the ground.

Hungry. So hungry.

One after another, Zeke charged through the crowd, carving a bloody swathe behind him. Blood splashed over the white uniforms. Blows bounced off his armor. Blinded by his hunger, he surged deeper, running further and further into the enemy.

In the middle of the army, the bodies continued to contort. Metal-plated armor clasped onto their forms. Wires pierced into their muscles, and their arms and legs grew longer as metal limbs formed around their hands and feet.

As they finished transforming, Zeke’s hand tingled. A connection opened up between him and the two newly formed cyborgs. He gasped, pushing away from a half-eaten man, and looked around. Where…what…

Awaiting orders…

Right. Zeke nodded. He thrust his hand out, calling out to the chip embedded in the back of his hand. “Attack all the enemies in white!”

Orders received.
